There's nothing wrong with an artist staying in their comfort zone and sticking with one topic (M.O.P. Writer, despite sounding like a poor-man's Cam'ron at times, still brings the heat via lines like "You're a f****n' clown, I gets it f****n' down/run the town, clutchin' pounds that'll turn your truck around/make a f****n' sound/I don't care if you got a label or a deal I'mma still put you underground/where the busters lounge, so don't bother me/n***a you're like 900 dollars, you're not a G". Rell strong-arms the track with verses like "I'm like Malcolm X when he was Detroit Red/like Muhammad Ali when he was Cassius, my n***a, I'm the baddest/ I own a few drug spots/so many diamonds, if they melt, the city will have to go on a flood watch". Kajmir Royale shows he's ready for prime time with the grandiose, rock 'n' roll-tinged beat for "True Colors", which is another winner. RAAB also supplies the bass-heavy, gangsta boogie for one of the LP's high points, "Think of a Problem". Anyone who's gazed at Hell Rell's mug without turning to stone can attest to this the joint's dope, though. RAAB Muzik, Rell chants on the song's hook, "Jason, Michael Myers, Freddy/F**k them, I'm more scary". After setting the tone with the album's sinister intro, "Black Gloves", Rell spits the realest line of his career on "Get Ready". Writer and a third-stringer named Sen from the "730 Dips", Rell does the heavy lifting on this one, with mixed results. With the only guest-appearances provided by his fellow Diplomat J.R. Re-treaded drug and gun talk aside, it was actually refreshing to hear an unapologetic, rugged album that didn't soften up for the radio.įor his sophomore turn Rell sticks to his formula of straight-to-the-street, tough-guy verses and hardcore instrumentals. However, with neck-snapping beats from the likes of Dame Grease and cameos by Styles P, Young Dro, Cam'ron and Juelz Santana, the album eventually won me over. Dismissing him as a Dipset benchwarmer, I didn't expect much from Hell Rell's non-mix tape debut, For the Hell of It.
